A few misteries we learnt today
Nicolau Nasoni, the Italian painter and architect who designed the CLERIGOS TOWER is a sort of National hero. They even coined the adjective "Nasonian style"
Porto was a really poor city until a few years ago, thanks to Ryanair it has become a tourist city and the restoration of lots of houses has taken place
L' ingegnere del ponte di ferro San Luis era un discepolo di Eiffel. Eiffel ha perso la gara d'appalto perché il discepolo aveva previsto due livelli di passaggio, lui no.
La parte più vecchia di Porto, di origine medievale, non molto tempo fa era pericolosa.
JK Rowling, la scrittrice di Harry Potter si è inspirata a diversi luoghi della città perché ha abitato qui in un periodo importante della sua vita (realtà e ricordi si sono mescolati nei romanzi): minimeexplorer.ch/2022/07/24/porto-luoghi-di-harry-potter/
Gaia (where our hosting school is located) is the 3rd biggest city in Portugal (after Lisbon and Porto) with 350,000 inhabitants
Sul muro della cattedrale c'è una linea che indica l'unità di misura che veniva usata nelle compravendite nella piazza del mercato. Sempre sul fronte della cattedrale, sul lato sinistro si vedono in rilievo una nave vichinga e una stella a cinque punte (simbolo pagano)
In città c'erano e si trovano ancora tanti conventi perché Porto era la città del vescovo. In uno di questi conventi, ora abbandonato, si vede ancora la "ruota degli esposti", dove venivano lasciati i neonati non desiderati affinché se ne occupassero le suore
Le barche con cui trasportavano il vino sono state copiate dai vichinghi. Il fiume Douro sembra tranquillo ma spesse volte nel corso della storia è esondato e sui muri delle case della città vecchia si vedono le tracce
Gran parte dei mattoni delle mura romane di porto sono stati rimossi per costruire le case
Porto wine became popular when wine producers started adding spirit in order to make it last longer - this way it could be transported everywhere without spoiling it
